Some History |
| Gem of an Idea was established in Fair Haven in 1982. Maureen has been an active participant in all phases of the business. The store offers Maureen's collections of custom designs as well as her talented staff and other notable designers in the jewelry industry. The feeling in the store is eclectic, unique and different -- clearly reflecting Maureen's own personal design style. Maureen takes pride in offering a variety of style and uniqueness at moderate, competitive prices. Maureen works primarily in gold and platinum, but offers a fine selection of sterling silver and beaded jewelry items as well. She also works with vintage pieces to re-design or update into a new creation. |

Getting Started |
| Maureen began making jewelry during her undergraduate studies to supplement her income. She did her own casting and fabrication, working mainly in sterling silver with semi-precious stones. After graduating 10th in her class at Monmouth University, she taught fine art at the high school level. After a few years of teaching, Maureen managed a jewelry business with connections to the catalog showroom industry enabling her to learn how and where to buy jewelry. She worked in this management/buyer position for six years. |

A Gem is Born |
| Maureen's role in the business has changed over the years. She began by working at the bench doing repair and custom orders. Now she oversees the general operations of the business, preferring to do the custom designing for individual customers and for stock pieces. The store now has a staff of two bench jewelers/setters and five sales associates including three gemologists and computer/office personnel. |

Goals and Challenges |
| Maureen believes that in order to grow in today's marketplace the key is service. She has always tried to do more and offer more to her clients. She believes that jewelry is part inspiration, part perspiration and a good part emotion, and recognizes that is important in serving the public successfully. |
